To quote Eminen “If you had one shot, one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted in one moment, would you capture it or just let it slip?”  Here's the success story of a hard working, non-US IMG who had only one interview but made it count!

Hi, Dr Barone!!

Here is another success Story. I'm an IMG, graduated in Colombia in 2013 and moved to the states at the end of 2014. As you know the USMLE tests are pricey so over the past 3 years I had to work as a Medical assistant, waitress, and nanny to keep up with all the expenses. It was very hard. I took step 1 at the beginning of 2016, passed with a low score of 203.

At that moment I was very sad and disappointed to the point where I thought it wasn’t worth taking the other tests but thanks to all the success stories i saw that year in your page I was able to recover my motivation and continued in this path. I took and passed CK ( 220) and CS the same year. That same year I did 4 observerships, 1 in FM and 3 in IM.

I applied for the match on 2017 and I felt pretty confident even though my scores were not the best. I applied to a total of 110 programs ( FM and IM). By late November I still had NO INTERVIEWS! I was devastated!. I was already looking for ways to improve my CV, so by early December I applied to an internship in PR and to research Fellowships.

On December 17 I received an email.. AN INTERVIEW INVITATION… the best news i had received in months! The interview was in less then 2 weeks so I prepared myself very well, I knew EVERYTHING about that program. On the interview day I felt GREAT, I was confident that I rocked my interview but off course worried because the chances of matching with just 1 interview are VERY LOW. On match day , I came to find out that I MATCHED with ONLY 1 interview and on my first attempt!! This only proves that you can’t give up on your dreams, everything is possible. I would like that others that have lost their hopes like I did once, to have faith and believe in themselves. BE PERSISTENT!!

Happy for you.
Question - How and where did you do your observerships? I am a NonUS IMG and looking to find out how I can land an observership. I do have a Visitor Visa. Planning to complete my usmle steps by this year end.
