BaroneRocks Goes Live!!!

This blog is dedicated to my medical students, residents, and fellows that I teach at my institutions. Medicine should be fun so why not in cyberspace too!

When diseases strike, they don’t spare the rich and famous.  Because of their popularity, the pathology becomes very memorable. So I like to use “pathology of the stars” to help tattoo the information to your brain.

I'm going to comment on Exam-Relevant topics. If it’s an exam question…. I’ll talk about it. I’m all about points, baby, points!

Medical Devices: Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)

Here's an example of an ICD in action.  A Belgian soccer player with a heart condition was allowed to return to play after having a cardioverter-defibrillator implanted.

Watch as the soccer player walks towards the sidelines and collapses. This was most likely due to an arrhythmia producing decreased perfusion to the brain and syncope.  A few seconds later, you can notice his legs contract due to the shock delivered by the ICD.  With the heart beating again, he regains consciousness and sits up!  Amazing!!!

This is one of the Miracles of Modern Medicine..... which you are now a part of!!!!!

Changing the Education Paradigm

Is standardized testing and the boards out of date?

Is ADHD actually an advantage for a physician?

I would love to hear your opinion of this interesting video:

1. What was "special" about the bone marrow transplant that he received?

2. Which part of the HIV virus does this co-receptor interact with?

3. What disease is he now at risk of getting?

4. What was the new class of drugs that was invented to  block this co-receptor?

Medical Procedure: Replacing Body Parts

Interesting new medical way to replace organs presented on the PBS television show "NOVA science NOW."

 Watch 13 minute video here.

"Scientists are learning how to grow custom-made body parts so they can be ready when you—and your vital organs—start falling apart. At the University of Minnesota, Doris Taylor and her colleagues strip organs of their cells, reseed the organ "skeletons" with living cells, and watch as the organs start working right in front of their eyes."

“You’ll never look at dinner the same way again”

A look behind the veil!  One of the most important things in our life is food! Yet we never stop to think “where does it all come from?”.  Sometimes I think it might be better not to know, but this is far too important. Yes! There are poo burgers and Ecoli O157:H7, but that’s only the beginning of what this documentary brings to light about how our food makes it to the plate.  It’s got everything I say in class and more.  Learn the truth about the food that you are going to eat today!  Fortunately, this video offers some positive solutions and things that you can do to protect yourself and change this world for the better.  Remember, as doctors we must be the guardians of the public!

A must see!  I highly recommend it!

I've added it to the Barone Books Amazon store. Click here and see it for yourself!
